A glance at a world map will show you that Sri Lanka is a tiny island just north of the equator in the Indian Ocean. The warm nutrient-rich waters, the hot tropical weather, and an ideal location makes Sri Lanka the perfect holiday destination for lovers of diving – shallow or deep. Diving in Sri Lanka’s waters is a treat, as the island is ranked very high in biodiversity – in the ocean more than in land – and some treats are available off the coasts in the form of coral reefs and even shipwrecks.

Sri Lanka diving tours are always a different experience each time, as the currents shift lighter things around the seafloor, and the species range you will find on one day might differ drastically a few months later. The waters are known for their endemic species of fish, crustaceans, and other ocean dwellers. All our snorkeling and diving tours include at least one certified guide; you will also be provided the safety equipment and training required.

Surfing

Sri Lanka is a famous surfing destination that caters to all experience levels. There are waves for learning how to stand on a surf board and there are tubes over shallow waters with sea urchins that make the wave even more exciting – surfers know what that means!

The country has different seasonal patterns on each side of the island; when one coast is choppy, the other is calm. The rains take turns hitting the coast from different directions, making Sri Lanka a year round surf option. The main surfing season for the south is from November to May – that’s when the waves are utter perfection. The best season on the east coast is from April to October, when the waves are longer.

Wind surfing

From a beginner to an expert just about everyone can find their ideal windsurfing and kitesurfing expedition destinations. The southern and southwestern coast, in particular, is preferred by surfers and the season lasts from November through April before the monsoons set in.

Negombo, to the north of Colombo, is often referred to as the water sports paradise of Sri Lanka. Excellent weather and surf conditions make it ideal and the opportunities it offers are varied. The lagoon is better suited for the amateur surfer while the beachfront is a great option for the experts. Windsurfing in Negombo between January and March can be really exciting.
