DAMBULLA GOLDEN TEMPLE & CAVE TEMPLE COMPLEX.
In the town of Dambulla, located on top of a mountain 350 meters above sea level, stands a Buddhist cave temple comprising five caves. This temple houses the largest collection of Buddha statues, many of which are over 2,000 years old. The frescoes that adorn the walls and ceilings are a remarkable example of temple wall painting. The temple dates back to the 1st century BC but underwent completion and restoration in the 12th and 18th centuries. During the reign of King Nissankamalla in the 12th century, the temple was restored, and 73 Buddha statues were covered in gold. As a result, the temple became known as the "Golden Cave Temple." This monument is under the protection of UNESCO. At the foot of the Dambulla Temple, you will find the youngest statue of the Golden Buddha, which is only 70 years old. This statue guards the entrance to the Museum of Buddhism and the paths leading to the ascent of the temple.
