KINGDOM OF SIGIRIYA LION'S ROCK
Sigiriya is an ancient palace located in the central Matale District near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province, Sri Lanka. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle, the Culavamsa, this site was selected by King Kasyapa (477 – 495 CE) for his new capital. He built his palace on top of this rock and decorated its sides with colorful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock, he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. Today, Sigiriya is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site. It is the most visited historic site in Sri Lanka.
DAMBULLA ROCK CAVE COMPLEX & GOLDEN TEMPLE
In the town of Dambulla, atop a mountain 350 meters above sea level, lies a Buddhist cave temple composed of five caves. This temple houses the largest collection of Buddha statues, many of which are over 2,000 years old. The frescoes that adorn the walls and ceiling are a remarkable treasure trove of temple mural painting. On the left side of the ceiling, the key moments of Buddha's life are illustrated, including his birth, his renunciation of royal life, his enlightenment, the seven weeks following his enlightenment, his first sermon, and his entry into the bliss of Nirvana. Remnants of plaster with traces of paint found outside the caves suggest that the temple once served as an extensive gallery of paintings. The temple dates back to the 1st century BC, but it was expanded and restored in the 12th and 18th centuries. In the 12th century, during the reign of King Nissankamalla, the temple was restored, and 73 Buddha statues were covered in gold, leading to its nickname, the "Golden Cave Temple." Today, this monument is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. At the foot of the Dambulla Temple stands the youngest Golden Buddha statue, which is only 70 years old. It guards the entrance to the Buddhist Museum and the caves that lead up to the temple.
