Overview

DOLPHIN & WHALE WATCHING

The best time for whale and dolphin watching in Kalpitiya is from November to April. Peak whale watching seasons are November-December and March-April.

Kalpitiya differs from Mirissa and Trincomalee in that there's no need to travel far out to sea: you can see killer whales, blue whales, and Bryde's whales surfacing as they approach shore to feed on the coral reef, just 3-5 km from the shoreline.

Further into the ocean there is a sharp drop in depth after the reef, and at a distance of 7-9 km from the shore you can often encounter other species of whales: large and pygmy sperm whales, humpback whales and pilot whales, as well as 6 species of oceanic dolphins: bottlenose dolphins and beakless dolphins, Fraser's and Risso's dolphins, spotted and striped dolphins.

WILPATTU NATIONAL PARK JEEP SAFARI

Wilpattu National Park, also known as Willu-pattu ("Land of Lakes"), is located in Sri Lanka. A distinctive feature of this park is the presence of "willus," which are natural lakes—sand-lined pools or depressions that collect rainwater. The park is situated in the arid lowland region of Sri Lanka's northwest coast, approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Anuradhapura and 26 kilometers (16 miles) north of Puttalam, making it about 180 kilometers (110 miles) north of Colombo. Covering an area of 1,317 square kilometers (508 square miles) or 131,693 hectares, Wilpattu ranges in elevation from 0 to 152 meters (0 to 499 feet) above sea level. The park features nearly one hundred and six lakes (willus) and tanks. As the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka, Wilpattu is internationally recognized for its population of leopards (Panthera pardus kotiya). A remote camera survey conducted in Wilpattu from July to October 2015 by the Wildlife and Wildlife Conservation Trust documented forty-nine leopards in the area studied, with the highest density occurring between Block I of Yala National Park and the Horton Plains.

 JAFFNA CITY TOUR

Jaffna is a city on the northern tip of Sri Lanka. Nallur Kandaswamy is a massive Hindu temple with golden arches and an ornate gopuram tower. On the coast, the star-shaped Jaffna Fort was built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and later occupied by the Dutch and British. The Jaffna Public Library is a symbol of the city's post-war renaissance. The Jaffna Archaeological Museum displays Dutch cannons and pre-colonial artifacts.

ANURADHAPURA  ANCIENT CITY

Sri Lanka has seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It's time to visit one of them. We're heading to Anuradhapura, the ancient capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom. Did you know that the city was founded in the 2nd century BC, and by the 2nd century AD, it had two- and three-story houses, a sewer system, and running water! It's here that the Bo tree grows, from a shoot of the very tree under which Gautama Buddha received enlightenment!

MIHINTALE ROCK TEMPLE.

Mihintale is a mountain peak near Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. According to Sri Lankans, it is the site of the meeting between the Buddhist monk Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa, marking the beginning of the spread of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

RITIGALA FOREST MONASTERY

Ritigala is a mountain in central Sri Lanka, home to an ancient Buddhist monastery. The monastery's ruins and rock inscriptions date back to the 1st century BC. It is located 43 km (27 mi) from the ancient monastic city of Anuradhapura.

Ritigala is a strict nature reserve covering 1,528 hectares (3,780 acres). It was established on November 7, 1941 (Gazette No. 8809) and is managed by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife and the Sri Lanka Department of Forestry.

THE TEMPLE OF TOOTH RELICS

Dalada Maligawa is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Since 311, when the Tooth appeared on the island in the hair of Princess Hemamala, the relic has become a symbol of sovereignty. The city where the Tooth Relic was housed was considered the national capital. When the Tooth Relic arrived in Kandy in 1590, King Vimala Dharma Surya I built a two-story temple on the grounds of the royal palace, where the relic was enshrined. Wood carvings, painted ceilings, and doors trimmed with silver and ivory adorn the temple.

THE VEDDA TRIBE.

Deep in Sri Lanka, approximately 60 km east of Kandy, 340 families of the ancient Vedda tribes still survive among the jungle, maintaining a primitive way of life. Each tribe has a chief, and after a brief conversation with him, you can enter the village and learn about their way of life. The tribes primarily hunt and are sometimes nomadic. Their main hunting weapons are bows and arrows, axes, and knives. The men wear only a loincloth or sarong. The main food source is small and medium-sized game—deer, rabbits, and birds. Villagers will demonstrate various ceremonies, the procedure for making a fire with two stones, and how to hunt animals.

There are various accounts of the appearance of the "wild people" (Veddas) on the island. Some consider them "people who came from nowhere," while others consider them the first inhabitants of Sri Lanka, many thousands of years ago. The ethnographer Seligman, who studied the Veddas in 1911, classified the tribes into "Veddas," "Village Veddas," and "Coast Veddas." However, only the "Veddas" are "pure," true Veddas, preserving their original way of life. In my observations, the true Veddas, like the "Village Veddas" and "Coast Veddas," have long since succumbed to the influence of civilization, but have not assimilated. On the contrary, amid the growing tourist boom, they have made the right decision to return to their primitive way of life.

ROYAL BOTANICAL GARDENS AT PERADENIYA

The Royal Botanical Garden in Peradeniya is one of the finest in Asia. Founded in 1821, the garden is located 12 km from Kandy, in a bend of the Mahaweli River, Sri Lanka's largest river. Sri Lanka's finest horticulturists have divided the vast hilly area into parklands reflecting various types of tropical flora.

The contrasting colors of the ornamental and flowering trees, most of which bloom during the dry season, enchant visitors. One of the most striking areas is the collection of indoor plants (750 species), distinguished by their unique leaf shapes and diverse colors. But the garden's main attraction is its ornamental orchids (approximately 100 species). The garden is renowned for its collection of 175 palm species, which not only decorate the landscape but also provide people with everything they need: food, clothing, shelter, and fuel.

NATIONAL PARK HORTON PLAINS

Horton Plains National Park is a national park located in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, established in 1988. It is situated at an altitude of 2,100–2,300 meters (6,900–7,500 feet) and features montane grasslands and cloud forest. The park is rich in biodiversity, with many species endemic to the region. It is also a popular tourist destination, located 8 kilometers from the town of Ohiya, 6 kilometers from the renowned Ohiya Gap/Dondra Watch, and 32 kilometers from Nuwara Eliya. Horton Plains is the source of three major rivers in Sri Lanka: the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe. In Sinhala, the plains are known as the Maha Eliya Plains. Archaeological findings from the Balangoda culture, including stone tools, have been discovered in the area. The vegetation of the plains consists of grasslands interspersed with montane forests, which include numerous endemic woody plants. Large herds of Sri Lankan sambar deer are commonly found here, and the park is recognized as an Important Bird Area, home to many bird species that are not only endemic to Sri Lanka but also unique to the Horton Plains. Forest loss poses a significant threat to the park, with some studies suggesting that it may be caused by a natural phenomenon. Among the notable tourist attractions in the park are World's End Cliff and Baker's Falls.

FLYING RAWANA  ADVENTURE PARK

Flying Ravana Adventure Park is a one-of-a-kind experience available in Sri Lanka, nestled among the lush green estates of Ella. It boasts the country's first mega zipline, proudly adorned with a unique design.

The dual-rope zipline stretches over half a kilometer, glides at 80 km/h, and offers a bird's-eye view of the island's beautiful hills.

Designed exclusively for adventure enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies who prefer an unusual hillside experience, the adventure park offers ATV/quad bike rides, abseiling, archery, and aerial slicing for a thrilling outdoor experience.

Flying Ravana truly is Ella at its finest.

LITTLE ADAMS PEAK

Little Adam's Peak is situated in the mountainous region of Uva Province, just 2 km east of Ella. Although it is referred to as a small peak, its name is derived from the sacred Adam's Peak (Sri Pada), which is famous for housing Buddha's footprint, and because of certain similarities between the two peaks. Little Adam's Peak attracts many travelers visiting Sri Lanka who wish to admire the stunning mountain landscapes. The hike to the summit is relatively easy and offers a breathtaking panoramic view. As you ascend through lush tea plantations, waterfalls, and rice fields, you can fully appreciate the enchanting mountain scenery.

COLOMBO CITY TOUR
Colombo is the commercial capital and largest city in Sri Lanka by population. According to the Brookings Institution, the Colombo metropolitan area is home to 5.6 million people, of which 752,993 live in the municipality. It is the island's financial center and a tourist destination.
