Colombo is the commercial capital and largest city of Sri Lanka. According to the Brookings Institution, Colombo has a population of 5.6 million in the metropolitan area, and 752,993 in the City proper. It is the financial center of the island and a popular tourist destination. Colombo was known to ancient traders 2,000 years ago. Famous landmarks in Colombo include Galle Face Green, Viharamahadevi Park, Beira Lake, Colombo Racecourse, Planetarium, University of Colombo, Mount Lavinia beach, Nelum Pokuna Theatre, Colombo Lotus Tower(is being constructed) as well and the National Museum.

PANJAMUGA ANJANEYAR TEMPLE

This is the first Anjaneyar Temple in Sri Lanka and also the only Panchamuga (five-faced) Anjaneyar Temple in Sri Lanka. It's the only temple in the world to have a chariot for Ajanyear. The chariot festival is held annually end Dec/ beginning of January. Hanuman’s mother is Anjan. Hanuman is known as Anjan + Aiyar = Anjaneyar in South India (Hamuman in North India)

KELANIYA TEMPLE

Kalaniya is the place where King Veebeshana ruled after being crowned by Lakshmana. As Lord Rama was in exile for 14 years, he could not take part in any coronation ceremony, deputed his younger brother, Prince Lakshmana, to crown Veebeshana.

MUNNESHWARAM KOVIL

It is believed that Munishwaram predates the Ramayana, and a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was located here. Munishwaram means the first temple for Shiva (Munnu + Easwaran). A Shiva Lingam was already here when Lord Rama visited this place. Lord Rama, after his victorious battle, left for Ayodhya with Sita in one of King Ravana’s Vimanas. He felt he was being followed by a Bramhaasthi Dosham (a malevolent black shadow) as he had killed King Ravana, who was a Brahmin.

MANVARI TEMPLE

When the Vimana was passing over Munishwaram, he felt the Vimana vibrating and realized the Brahmaasti Dosham was not following him at this particular point. He stopped the Vimana at this juncture and asked god Lord Shiva for advice. Lord Shiva blessed Lord Rama and advised installing and praying at four lingams located at Manavari, Thiru Koneshwaram, Thiru Ketheshwaram, and Rameshwaram in India as the only remedy to get rid of the dosham. At the Manavari Temple, Chilaw Manavari is the first lingam installed and prayed to by Rama, and to date, this lingam is called Ramalinga Shivan. Rameshwaram is the only other lingam in the world named after Lord Rama.

DOLUKANDA TEMPLE

Dolukanda is a well-known mountain range due to the Dolukanda Raja Maha Viharaya (Dolukanda Buddhist Temple), and it is believed that the mountain is directly linked to the great Indian epic, the Ramayana Trail in Sri Lanka. In the Ramayana story, this mountain is declared as the Dolukada Sanjeewani mountain. This is one of the five Sanjeevani drops in Sri Lanka, which is located in the Kurunegala District. This is one of the popular Ramayana sites of Sri Lanka, where it is believed that parts of the Himalaya Mountain were felt while it was carried to Sri Lanka by Hanuman.

There is ample evidence that 5,000 years ago, the great sages in the history of the Hela were perfect in the medical and post-medical fields, and that they maintained great medicinal gardens. Here is a special note about Dolukakanda, the herbal garden of King Buddhadasa Veda, who is known as the great Vedic teacher who is talked about in the history of the Hela

DAMBULLA CAVE TEMPLE

Dambulla cave temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is a World Heritage Site (1991) in Sri Lanka. The rock towers are spread over 160 m above the surrounding plains. There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area. Major attractions are spread over five caves.

RITIGALA MOUNTAIN

Ritigala is home to 70 rock caves that were believed to have been inhabited since the first century BC. Mahavamsa, the great historical chronicle of Sri Lanka, narrates that Ritigala was

known by the name of “arittha-pabbata” during the reign of Pandukabhaya (377-307 BC), the third king of Sri Lanka. Since then, Ritigala had been, at intervals, a sanctuary for the kings at war against the Dravidian invaders to the island till the 7th century: King Dutugemunu (161-137 BC) and King Jetthatissa in the seventh century.

At the end of the tenth century, Ritigala came under the barrage of South Indian invasions

Ritigala monastery, where Pansakulikas monks dwelled, has no stupas, no image houses, or temples. The long meditational pathway, which branches out to the buildings while climbing up the mountain, brings about tranquility in the jungle setting. The architecture herein is in line with all other forest monasteries of Pansakulikas: certain mysterious features unique in Sri Lankan monastic architecture; long paved paths often with roundabouts in them; large stone-lined and stepped reservoirs; and unique double platforms.

KONESWARAM TEMPLE

Thirukoneswaram, or the Holy Koneswaram Temple, is a Hindu temple in Thirukonamalai (Trincomalee) on the east coast of Sri Lanka. The temple lies on a high rocky promontory surrounded on three sides by the sea. It bears a history of over three millennia, with its records indicating its roots in 1580 BC. This still beautiful, historical monument is what remains of what once was a sprawling temple city equal to the ancient city of Madurai, India.

KINNIYA  HOT SPRINGS

Kanniya Hot Springs is a famous hot spring in Sri Lanka from the past. There are seven wells in a square shape. Wells are only 3–4 feet deep, and you can clearly see the bottom. The temperature is considerably high but varies from one spring to another. Wells run out of water when 10-15 buckets of water are taken out.

THIRUKETHEESWARAM TEMPLE

Ketheeswaram temple or Thiruketheeswaram Hindu Temple in Mannar is one of the most venerated Hindu Temples in Sri Lanka, located in Mannar District, Northern Province of Sri Lanka. This is also one of the five Pancha Ishwarams (five abodes of God Shiva) temples in Sri Lanka dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva. And also, this temple was venerated by Shaivas throughout the continent. According to the Hindu natives of the Manthota, Thiruketheeswaram is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams of Shiva glorified in the poems of the Tevaram. It is believed that there is a direct link between the Ketheeswaram Temple and the Ramayana trail in Sri Lanka.

RAM SETU

Rama Sethu or Adams Bridge, the string of coral reefs, shoals, and shifting sandbanks that connect India with Sri Lanka, was created by Shri Rama and Shri Lakshman with the assistance of Lord Hanuman and the ape army to reach Lanka in order to find Shri Rama’s wife Sita. You can walk on the remains of this ancient bridge.
